breakfast, brunch, lunch

Square One @ East Hollywood

Best Thing: Cheese grits and the coffee from Intelligensia is pretty darn tasty too.

Might Not Like: The parking in the area is hard to come by and about as shady as the rather uninviting interior of this what-could-be a cute little place.

Nestled into a tiny building that lives in the shadow of the monstrous bright blue temple of Scientology, Square One is a go to brunch spot for the mid-town crowd, and for a good reason or two. While the interior of the building feels a little like it meant to be trendy-rustic but fell a burlap pillow or two short, the outside patio is a welcome addition to this city brunch place. The servers are attentive, almost so much so that you wonder if they’d be just as happy if you ordered and then mossied on your way without actually sitting to enjoy your food. But the food is pretty good. And this is probably why Square One makes the lists for brunch in LA.

The menu is filled with delicious comfort food from scrumptious french toast to cheesy grits and eggs benedict covered in beautiful hollandaise.  While the presentation of the food and the atmosphere is a little understated, the food is tasty and Square One works to have a menu that is full of fresh, local, sustainable choices.  For these reasons, it’s worth a morning breakfast jaunt, but maybe not when the line is long.

More HIP than trendy.

Right between cheap and spendy for a good old CHENDY.
